The Alliance of Civilizations (AoC) was established in 2005, at the initiative of the Governments of Turkey and Spain, under the auspices of the United Nations. It aims to improve understanding and cooperation among nations and peoples across cultures and religions and, in the process, to help counter the forces that fuel polarization and extremism. The AoC is supported by a Group of Friends - a community of over 80 member countries and international organizations and bodies. The AoC cooperates with various partner organizations such as UNESCO, Council of Europe, League of Arab States, ALECSO, ISESCO and United Cities and Local Governments.
