Beşeri çevre içerisinde değerlendirilen yerleşim alanlarında insan etkili yaşanmışlıkların birikimi olarak tanımlanan kent hafızası, çoğunlukla mekân ve yapı sanatı numunelerinin çevresinde şekillenmektedir. Kent hafızası oluşum sürecine katılan farklı kültür çevreleri arttıkça yerleşimin birikimi de zenginleşmektedir. Medeniyetlerin dönemsel izlerini günümüze taşıyan bu zenginlik, Trabzon şehrinin doğu varoşlarından birisini oluşturan ve adını çömlek üretimi işinden alan Çömlekçi Mahallesi’nde de tespit edilebilmektedir. Mahalle, Helenistik Dönem Mithra Kültü, Roma ve Bizans İmparatorluğu, Komnenos Krallığı, Osmanlı ve Cumhuriyet Dönemleri kültür katmanları yanında Katolik İtalyanların, Ortodoks Rumların, Mihitarist Ermenilerin ve Müslüman Türklerin iskân alanıdır. Yalnızca çoklu kültür katmanları ile değil sanat ve zanaat üretim alanı olarak da şehrin bütçesine ve canlılığına önemli katkıları olan mahallenin bilinir kılınması, kent hafızasının cüzlerinin bütünlenmesi adına da oldukça önemlidir. Bu çalışma, Çömlekçi Mahallesi’nin bilinenlerine eklenen yeni bulguların bir araya toplanması ile üretilmiştir. Mimari yapılanmanın yanında zengin yaşanmışlıklara da tanıklık eden mahalle; çoklu kültür katmanlarıyla birlikte sanat tarihi disiplini ana belirleyicisi etrafında, kent hafızası bakımından ele alınmış ve tanımlama, tanık gösterme, yüzey araştırması ve değerlendirme kıstasları ile anlam ve yorumun da katıldığı hermeneutic yöntem çerçevesinde incelenmiştir.

Urban memory, defined as the accumulation of human experiences within human settlements, is largely shaped around examples of spatial and architectural art. As different cultural environments participate in the formation of urban memory, the accumulation of the settlement also becomes richer. This richness, which carries the traces of civilisations through the ages to the present day, can also be observed in the Çömlekçi Neighbourhood, which forms one of the eastern suburbs of Trabzon and takes its name from the pottery production industry. The neighbourhood is home to cultural layers from the Hellenistic Period Mithra Cult, the Roman and Byzantine Empires, the Komnenos Kingdom, the Ottoman and Republican periods, as well as Catholic Italians, Orthodox Greeks, Mitharist Armenians and Muslim Turks. The neighbourhood's significance extends beyond its multiple cultural layers; as an area of artistic and artisanal production, it makes a significant contribution to the city's budget and vitality. Raising awareness of the neighbourhood is crucial for the integration of fragments of the city's memory. This study compiles new findings added to the existing knowledge about Çömlekçi Mahallesi. The neighbourhood, which bears witness to rich experiences alongside its architectural structure, has been examined in terms of urban memory, centred on the discipline of art history alongside its multiple cultural layers, and studied within a hermeneutic framework that incorporates meaning and interpretation through the criteria of definition, witnessing, surface research, and evaluation.
