Alternatif Dilde Özet: The topics of science and technology course are closely associated with daily life. The similarities of real life topics are increase their interest in the subject and as a result, many studies indicate the occurrence are more effective for learning. Hence, relating real life to science and technology courses makes the lessons more entertaining and contributes to the development of positive attitudes by students towards the course. Besides formal education, informal education has also an important role in the education of science literate individuals who can relate daily life to science education. Informal science teaching can be basically defined as training performed outside the school through various channels. Such education can include activities such as watching television, reading textbooks, magazines and newspapers, visiting museums and science centers. Some objectives of the science and technology course are concerned with making connections with daily life and newspapers present data relating the objectives of the course; therefore, newspapers can be suitable materials to be used in this course. Incorporating newspapers into lesson plans may render science and technology course more interesting; hence, may have positive contributions to students’ participation and academic achievement. In addition to this, this may positively affect students’ higher level thinking skills and their attitudes towards the course. The content of newspapers reflects readers’ daily lives, experiences and needs. Therefore, newspapers serve the function of a bridge between the class and real life. Discussions of new innovations in science in different parts of newspapers draw the interest of students and use of newspapers in class facilitates the generation of connections between science and daily life. Level of being related with daily life and students' learnings is one of the criteria shown whether purpose of the education is reached. However, according to many research results, students can not do associate with daily life. A matter of fact in our country for the use of newspapers in science classes as a limited number of studies on students' academic achievement in elementary science and technology courses shows that, attitudes, and higher-level thinking skills, increase benefited from the newspapers. The Ministry of National Education (MEB) issued a directive in 2008 stating the objectives of some courses which can be attained with the use of newspapers in elementary schools and pointing out the activities that can be developed by means of newspapers (MEB, 2008). Yet, the number of studies looking at how to make use of newspapers in science education is very limited. On the other hand, newspapers should be regarded as tools directly related to the topics of science and technology course and suitable to associate them with daily life. Indeed, limited number of studies conducted in our country about the use of newspapers in science courses has revealed that the use of newspapers in class can enhance students’ higher thinking skills, their academic achievement and attitudes towards the course. Hence, the present study aims to emphasize the importance of newspaper use in science education and discuss in detail how newspapers can be used in science courses and two sample lesson activities are presented to show how newspapers can be drawn on in class. While developing newspaper-based activities, internet resources and printed newspapers can be used. After deciding where to find the newspaper, the materials to be used should be selected. For this purpose, some questions such as “Will the students find the material interesting?”, “Does the material selected comply with the students’ prior information?”, “Is the material selected suitable for the students to comprehend?”, “Do we need to use only today’s newspapers?” should be taken into consideration. However, there is no need for the selected materials to have an exact compliance with the topic of the lesson where the materials will be used. Even if the materials selected from newspapers are partially related to the topic, they can be suitable for the activities to be carried out in the lesson. While designing activities, headlines, news, photographs, advertisements, sports news and weather forecasts can be used. The developed activity plans consist of two main sections, being teacher instruction manual and student activity part. In teacher instruction manual, there are parts which are preparation for the lesson where how the preparation for the lesson will be done is explained in detail, newspaper focus, expected gains, introduction and warm-up, during the lesson and after the lesson parts. The present article written based on the studies looking at how newspapers can be capitalized on in science and technology courses in the literature aims to encourage science and technology teachers to use newspapers in their lessons and provide them with some insights. Moreover, this article can provide some guidance to future research.
