Özellikle 1980’li yıllardan itibaren, çağdaş çeviribilim kuramcıları Yapısalcılık Sonrası düşünce akımlarının da etkisiyle, çeviri tarihi boyunca çeşitli biçimlerde karşımıza çıkan norm koyucu ve evrenselci yaklaşımları farklı açılardan sorgulayıp eleştirmiştir. Buna karşın, 2000’lerin başında bazı çeviribilimcilerin çeviri etiğinin daha çok bir meslek etiği biçiminde ele alınması, meslek ilkelerinin ve meslek standartlarının ise daha kapsayıcı hale getirilmesi yolunda çağrılar yapmaları dikkat çekicidir. Bu yeni yaklaşım, çeviribi-limde bir süreliğine etkisini kaybeden evrensellik ülküsünün yeniden canlanması biçi-minde yorumlanabilir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, işte bu yeni evrenselcilik eğiliminin altında yatan nedenleri sorgulamaktır. Bu doğrultuda, öncelikle çeviri tarihinin belli dönemle-rinde çeviri etiğine ilişkin nasıl yaklaşımlar sergilendiği belirlenmeye, bir anlamda, bu-günkü durumun arka planı sunulmaya çalışılacaktır. Daha sonra, yeni evrenselcilik eği-liminin iki muhtemel nedeni, yani görecilikten kaçınma arzusu ve çağın getirdiği uzman-laşma gereksinimleri üzerinde durulacak ve evrenselcilik eğiliminin doğurabileceği olum-suz sonuçlar tartışılacaktır.

Especially since the 1980s, modern translation theories influenced by Post-structuralist ideas have questioned and criticized the normative, universalist approaches that come up in various guises in translation theory. This, however, does not seem to have stopped so-me translation theorists from expressing a wish at the turn of the new Century: that trans-lation ethics should be regarded as professional ethics and that professional codes and standards should be more comprehensive. The new approach can well be interpreted as the revival of the age-old universalist ideals that were put aside for some time, albeit short, in translation studies. This paper aims to explore the possible reasons for the new universalist trend in the field. Aiming to provide a background against which to evaluate the present situation in translation ethics, the paper presents a very general overview of major translation theories and their propositions that might have implications in transla-tion ethics. The paper also seeks to reveal the possible negative outcomes of the new uni-versalist trend by discussing two probable reasons for it, namely, the tendency to avoid relativism and the increasing need for professionalization.
