AN ASSESSMENT OF CHARLES DICKENS'S GREAT EXPECTATIONS AND HALIT ZIYA UŞAKLIGİL'S AŞK-I MEMNU

A writer of a novel is naturally to reflect the social forces of his own age in
his work of art. Characterization, setting and the language are the major tools of an
author with which he creates his work. The study in hand consists of a comparative
study of two well-known authors; Charles Dickens and Halit Zıya Uşaklıgil's two
master pieces: Great Expectations and Aşk-ı Memnu. The way how the authors deal
with the tools of characterization, setting and the language so as to illuminate the
social forces of their time is the main purpose of this study.
